Daecheon Beach, Boryeong

Known for its tranquil waves and golden sands, Daecheon Beach is a favorite for families and anyone seeking a relaxing beach day. Deacheon Beach also hosts the famous Boryeong Mud Festival, held in July in South Korea, which lets visitors plunge into mud wrestling pits, slide down slippery mudslides, and dance at remarkable beachside concerts. Outside festival season, Daecheon Beach is wonderful for long walks, picnics, or simply soaking up the sea breeze. It can be reached from Seoul in approximately 2-3 hours by intercity bus, with local transport connecting directly to the beach area.

Travel Tips for Visiting South Korea Beaches

  • Getting There: Seoul is inland, but there are several beaches near Seoul, South Korea, that usually involve taking a train, bus, or car. For example, the east coast, including Gangneung, is just a 2-2.5 hour KTX ride from Seoul, followed by a quick bus or taxi ride. Busan’s beaches are well connected via the subway and local buses. On the other hand, reaching Jeju Island’s beaches requires a short domestic flight.
  • Safety: Lifeguards are generally on duty during the official summer swimming season, typically in July and August. Outside of that period, swimming may be restricted. Pay attention to posted signs, designated swimming areas, and the weather forecast, particularly during monsoon season.
  • Packing: Bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water, especially during the warmer months, since many beaches have limited shade. If you’re venturing to Jeju Island, water shoes may also be useful on rocky or volcanic shorelines. In addition, keep in mind that while popular beaches may be near convenience stores, restaurants, and restrooms, smaller or more remote beaches may have limited facilities. It’s wise to plan ahead by carrying snacks, towels, or any other essentials you might need.
  • When to Visit: When considering the best time to visit South Korea, July and August offer classic beach weather and a lively atmosphere. However, they tend to be more crowded. Late spring (May-June) and early fall (September) are often more comfortable, with pleasant conditions and fewer tourists, making it easier to take in the scenery and enjoy the beach at a leisurely pace.
